![]() ![]() One of the most famous Ole Miss players of all time was quarterback Archie Manning. The team went to the 2022 Sugar Bowl but lost to the Baylor Bears. In his second season as head coach, Kiffin led the Rebels to a 10-3 record in 2021. Past head coaches during this timeframe include Tommy Tuberville, Hugh Freeze and most recently Lane Kiffin. More recently, the Rebels have finished in the final national rankings 10 times since 1990. His greatest accomplishment was a college football national championship in 1960 with the team going 10-0-1. John Vaught became Mississippi head coach in 1947 and he guided the team for the next 24 seasons until 1970. The Rebels went to the Orange Bowl two years later with a 9-3 record in 1935. The Southeastern Conference or SEC began play in 1933 with Ole Miss as a charter member. Other teams in that conference at that time included Alabama, Auburn and Georgia. Playing as an Independent program, the Rebels joined the Southern Conference in 1922.
